HMM Zoids 1/72 Red Horn Part 7

Different paints, different panel liners, different foil stickers

Already up to Part 7 so far, Kotobukiya's HMM Zoids 1/72 Red Horn has become the plamo kit with the most work needed for me this year, surpassing Real Grade Gundam RX-78-2 and another Kotobukiya kit, SRW OG 1/144 scale ART-1, each with six postings on their painting and detailing. ^^

And the work on this HMM Zoids kit is not ending anytime soon. ^^

Continuing with the paint work on the various pipes, here are the parts that need to be painted silver.

Painted the targeted areas using Gaia Metallic Color No. 9 Bright Silver.

Closeups on the painted parts.

The fixed hydraulic pipes on the body frame parts were painted thoroughly to ensure that the silver paint covers all corners, including those behind the parts. ^^

As part of this batch of work, the pipe section of the tail connector piece is painted first. Since those tiny segments are located in tight spots, a lot of silver paint inevitably spilled onto the spring part. It's as expected, but not going to be problem in the end. ^^

The spring part is painted using Gaia Metallic Color No. 122 Star Bright Gold.

The gold paint is used to cover up the excessive silver paint applied earlier on.
This is why the spring wasn't painted in the previous posting.

Not planned beforehand, four tiny pipes on top the sensor-like component for the backpack are also painted gold.

On the other hand, for another large part I did plan to paint gold, the pipe behind the frills, was omitted from the paint work as I thought gold would make it too outstanding and ultimately cheapen the effect. ^^;
Instead, the "connectors" between the pipe sections are painted gray (using Gaia Color 074 Neutral Gray IV) instead.

All the parts to be painted metallic black.

Painted the targeted areas using Gaia Metallic Color No. 020 Gun Metal.

Closeups on the painted parts.

Because they are hard to hold, the rings behind the front feet are painted in two stages.
Held using metal clip for extra security, the exposed area is painted using Tamiya Paint Marker X-11 Chrome Silver.

When the paint has dried, the painted section is held using plastic clip as the remaining section is plainted.

Minor line details on the tail mounted-AEZ 20mm Beam Guns' magazines are panel lined using Tamiya's Panel Line Accent Color (Gray).

Those for the leg vents are done using Tamiya's Panel Line Accent Color (Black).

With excessive panel liner solution rubbed away on the rear hip joint parts using cotton swab soaked with thinner.

Closeups on the details.

The two other joint halves are detailed the same way as their painted counterpart.

The four parts to form the hip joints of the hind legs.

Most of the other pipe parts are detailed using a normal panel liner.

Excessive panel liner solution on the rear leg vent parts is rubbed away using cotton swab soaked with thinner, before line details around the bases of the pipes are done the usual way.

Repeated the same detailing method on the two large body frame parts.

Normal panel lining for the pipe behind the frills.

Excessive gray paint around the stout turret (painted in the previous posting) is scratched away using a knife before the muzzles themselves are painted using Tamiya Paint Marker X-11 Chrome Silver.

The base of the muzzles are panel lined.
As the parts are really small, the silver paint completely cover up the muzzle points, which forced them to have to be redrawn using a normal panel liner.

Test fitting the painted parts to see how the stout turret would turn out when assembled. ^^

(Left) Normal panel lining for the Composite Sensor Unit's scope part. The small dot at the bottom is painted red using a normal marker just for a bit of extra details. ^^
(Right) A short border between the antenna's body and the scope is painted black using normal marker to emphasize the gaps' appearance.

Test fitting the detailed parts to see how the Composite Sensor Unit would turn out when assembled. ^^

Even though the radar disc of the 80mm Surface-to-Air Double-barreled Beam Cannon now has a couple layers of paint applied to it (yellow in Part 3 and then dark gray in Part 5), I'm glad I could still managed to located what remained of the molded line details on the surface and applied normal panel lining to the part to reveal them. ^^

Foil sticker for the scope part of the same component.

Test fitting the detailed parts with one of the beam cannon turret to see how the weapon would turn out when assembled. ^^

Since there's no guide on how the sensor-like component for the backpack should be detailed, I guess I'm free to improvise. ^^
Metallic blue foil sticker pieces from the leftover sheet from BB Senshi Sangokuden Gotaitei Sonken Gundam Korinpaku are used for the two main scopes, ...

... while the really tiny one between the golden pipes makes use of a small piece from BB Senshi Char's Z'Gok.

Minor touchup on the panel lining of the three sensor component's parts.

(Left) Gundam Marker GM03 for Panel Lining Super Fine (Brown) and Tamiya's Panel Line Accent Color (Gray) are used to panel line the tail connector piece.
(Right) Test fitting the connector piece with the skid. ^^

"Large-scale" paint work as seen in the previous posting is already over for this HMM Zoids kit with this latest batch of work. Instead, a lot of detailing that is as attention-demanding and time-consuming is now needed. ^^

There's still more work to be done before this large kit is completed. ^^
